Our Facilities

In September 2015, we opened the Diamond. A new building with state-of-the-art engineering facilties to provide the best learning experience for our students.

The building and its facilities are the biggest ever investment the University has made in learning and teaching. It has 19 laboratories that offer practical learning experiences for our Undergraduate students.

We have two new major buildings with flexible study facilities: the £21 million Pam Liversidge Building for engineering and The Diamond.

Bit of a night owl?

The Diamond, our largest-ever investment in teaching and learning, has over 1,000 study spaces, nine lecture theatres, specialist engineering facilities and a library.

And it’s open 24-7. Just in case you’ve had enough socialising.

The Diamond is the largest capital investment in teaching and learning ever undertaken by the University. The 19,500m2 building houses specialist engineering laboratories, lecture theatres, flexible teaching spaces, workshops, a learning resource centre and formal and informal study environments for up to 5,000 students. The ethos of the building is to support work across the full spectrum of engineering, from fundamental science to professional practice. The design provides a public route at ground floor level.

“A central atrium at first floor enables people to view the ‘showcase’ engineering activities being undertaken and promotes collaboration and cross-disciplinary working in an environment fit for 21st century research and practice.”

“The best students’ union in the UK.”

Becoming a Sheffield student is all about trying new things, testing your strengths and discovering what you’re passionate about. Your students’ union is here to make sure nothing stands in your way.

We’ve been voted number one for the past seven years in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

As you’ve probably guessed, the entertainment and the social life are first rate. But the awards also reflect how effective our students’ union is at representing students and delivering the services they ask for.

Information Commons

The IC combines library facilities with study spaces and IT resources. It’s open 24-7, has full wireless access, over 500 PCs and a 70-seat cafe. And with over 100,000 of the most in-demand books, you won’t be short of inspiration.

Libraries

As well as the 24-hour IC, we have two other library sites on campus: Western Bank Library and the Health Sciences Library. They all offer something different. Together, it means access to 1.4 million books and journals and over 2,200 study spaces. And with your own online account, you can explore our online resources from wherever you are. To make life that bit easier, our library sites extend their opening hours when you need them most.

A growing community

We’re investing in the buildings on our campus to make sure you’ll have access to the best facilities.

Our award-winning Students’ Union recently had a £5 million renovation and we’ve now refurbished the neighbouring building to create a combined space with top–class services and facilities for staff, students and visitors. Our Management School has moved into a redesigned and refurbished 21st-century research and learning environment.
