Helpful utility information

Keep everything ticking along nicely: this section covers everything from your water and gas supply to what to do if you lose power.

Electricity

When it’s time to read your electric meter, you’ll find it in the box outside your home – use the triangular meter key to unlock the box.

Loss of power

If you lose all electricity in your home, first check if there’s a power cut in your area. If there isn’t, a fuse may have blown.

Hint…

Our video below explains how to reset the circuit breakers.

If this doesn’t work, call a qualified electrician as there may be a fault inside a fitted socket or switch.

Gas

The control valve for your gas supply is located in the meter box outside your house. You should have been given a triangular key to this box, so you can read the meter or close the control valve in an emergency.

If you smell gas or damage one of the gas pipes, switch off the supply immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Click here to read more on gas safety.

Water

The stop valve for your water supply is located on the footpath outside your home, to allow the water company to turn off the water for maintenance or in an emergency.

Hint…

If you need to switch off your water for any reason, there’s another stop valve in the cupboard under your kitchen sink, along with the hot and cold water feeds and waste pipes for your dishwasher and washing machine.
